I really liked seeing the down-to-earth, earnest young peasants who made up the Red Army. The author got to spend a lot of time with them and speak to them dialect differences notwithstanding. Now that I have experienced a bit of life in modern China I have a better idea of the changes that had to happen to make it possible.
